The
West Podium Park at Pembroke Real Estate’s
World Trade Center West in Boston
received the 2008 Green Roof Award of Excellence from Green
Roofs for Healthy Cities. Designed by
Philadelphia-based Roofscapes, Inc. and Pressley Associates,
the park sits above a three-story, mixed-use podium, as well
as part of the underground parking facility, and occupies the
space between the adjacent World Trade Center West tower and
the Seaport Hotel. The green roof
landscape is developed on two levels, each comprising about 50
percent of the total surface area. The upper level is an
un-irrigated extensive green roof and the lower level is an
irrigated intensive landscape with more elaborate
features.
Offering one of
the best examples of integrating extensive and intensive green
roof approaches in a single landscape, this project is
noteworthy for two additional reasons: 1) it is the first
project to be completed in the U.S. that utilizes pre-grown
Sedum mats, and 2) it was the first project to utilize a
network of buried ballasts to stabilize an extensive green
roof in a high-wind velocity zone. The combined extensive
and intensive green roofs greatly reduce average annual runoff
from the podium.
Completed
in 2003, the three-story podium was one of the first buildings
in the Boston area to incorporate an
environmentally-conscious green roof. It is part of an
overall program for the World Trade Center West tower designed
to meet the most stringent energy conservation standards.
The
West Podium Park’s award was for the
Intensive Industrial/Commercial category. Awards were
celebrated and distributed at the Sixth Annual International
Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference’s
awards luncheon, held on May 2nd, 2008 in Baltimore.
